Your Journey into the Italian Alps

It is a unique experience, that of being able to admire the most impressive peaks of Europe on your bike. Essential for this kind of experience, a good physical preparation and excellent equipment, as well as of course, some experience with the bicycle. An excellent level of training is required due to the numerous altitude difficulties to overcome. So we recommend the well-conditioned cyclist. The group will ride together on the flat and easier terrain, and will be allowed to ride at their own pace on the climbs, with Alberto at your side to encourage you to climb your very best. Imagine reaching the top breathless and smiling at your new teammates as they also approach and cheering them on to the finish!

Mountain weather is very difficult to predict so everyone must be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, even in the summer. Bring diverse layers and wind and waterproof jackets. We will ride mainly on low-vehicle roads, even if we sometimes cross high-density areas of housing and traffic. The route is very easy to follow thanks to the detailed route maps, but also with the GPX files used by your smartphone or GPS navigation. We will provide the route files for you to upload to your smartphone or personal bike computer, but not the devices themselves.

Day 2. Guided ride from Varenna to Aprica.

Our tour begins with a ferry from Bellagio to Varenna and the official start of pedaling along the entire northeastern shore of Lake Como, through the towns of Bellano, Dervio and Colico where the Adda River enters the lake from the Alps. Here you will begin riding on the quiet bicycle-pedestrian path, the Sentiero della Valtellina, through one of the most beautiful valleys of of Lombardy, the Valtellina. After passing through Sondrio and Tresenda, at Stazzona begins the 12 km climb with an average gradient of around 6.5% with a maximum 10% peak. At the end of the climb we will be in Aprica at 1,176 meters above sea level, ending the first stage of the tour and enjoying our accommodations for the night.

Day 3. Guided ride from Aprica to Passo di Gavia to Bormio.

Today is our first big mountain stage. Starting from Aprica you descend to Edolo then start slowly climbing up to Ponte di Legno along the main road that leads to the Passo del Tonale. There, we turn left to begin climbing to the Passo di Gavia, a climb with a length of 17.4 km, an average gradient of 7.8%, and a maximum pitch of 16%. Its summit is at 2,618 meters. Arriving at the top of the Gavia and after having a well-deserved break, you will face the long and demanding descent of about 30 km to Bormio.

Day 4. Guided ride from Bormio to Passo dello Stelvio to Prato to Passo dello Stelvio to Bormio.

This is the “queen stage” of your tour as in one day you climb the legendary Passo dello Stelvio from two sides: Bormio and Prato allo Stelvio. At an altitude of 2758 meters, the Stelvio is the second highest paved road in the Alps. It has been featured several times as the “Cima Coppi” in the Giro d’Italia, the title for the highest peak that racers face that year and the award for the most mountain classification points. Climbing this icon twice will give you a total of 4364 meters and 46 km of climbing. It has an average slope of 7.5% and maximum of 12%.

At the first summit of the Stelvio, you will have a rest stop, then descend into Switzerland towards Santa Maria and cross through the Val Mustair back into Italy. When we reach the base of the Stelvio in Prato allo Stelvio, we will have a short break and begin our second ascent. After our celebration and rest break is a 20 km descent back to Bormio.

This will be a special day as Alberto and our professional staff share their years of knowledge from making their own climbs of this icon and ensure your success.

Day 5. Guided ride from Bormio to Passo del Mortirolo to Sondrio to Bellagio (via shuttle and ferry).

We arrive at the last stage of the tour with the ascent of the legendary Passo del Mortirolo, a climb that has made cycling history of the last 20 years. From Bormio we ride down to Sondalo and Grosio. Once we get to Mazzo di Valtellina, we turn left and start climbing towards the Mortirolo. This is a climb made famous by the Giro d’Italia of 1852 meters and 12.4 km with an average gradient of 10% and a maximum of 20%. Once you get to the top, we will take a nice break and then descend to Tovo di Sant’Agata, returning through the Valtellina valley to Sondrio and the conclusion of the cycling tour. We will return to Bellagio by private van shuttle and ferry.
